If you’re new to our practice, you’ll need to book an exam and clean first. This allows us to ensure the ZOOM! in-chair whitening system is appropriate for your clinical needs. During this visit, we take impressions of your teeth to prepare custom take-home trays for post-procedure maintenance.

If there are no major issues, we can schedule your appointment for the Zoom whitening treatment.

Your dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums before carrying out any teeth whitening, to make sure your teeth are strong and healthy enough to respond well to whitening without causing any unwanted side effects.

It is important that you don’t have any gum disease or cavities when whitening, as this could increase the risk of tooth sensitivity or pain and may cause more damage to your teeth and gums.

Most healthy adults are suitable for treatment.

Teeth whitening will not affect teeth that have been crowned or veneered and will not change the colour of white fillings. It might not be as effective on teeth that are internally stained, for example through stains caused from prolonged use of antibiotics at a young age or from excess exposure to fluoride (fluorosis).

We can discuss your suitability for tooth whitening during your initial appointment and if necessary can recommend alternative methods of whitening teeth that cannot be bleached.

Our Zoom! in-house whitening system can whiten teeth in as little as an hour. After a good clean, we’ll protect your gums before applying whitening gel to your teeth. The gel is activated with light, which helps it to penetrate your teeth and lift stains.

The whitening gel may be washed off and re-applied several times during treatment. Afterwards, it is important to avoid coloured foods and drinks for the first two or three days.

We also provide patients with custom-made home tooth whitening kits. These use whitening trays that are fabricated to fit tightly over your teeth, preventing the whitening gel from leaking out.

Our dentists can prescribe the correct strength of whitening gel to comfortably whiten your teeth over the course of a few weeks. This method provides you with greater control over your whitening and treatment can be carried out in the privacy of your own home. Afterwards the custom whitening trays can be re-used to top up the results periodically.
