Dental fissure sealants protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth by sealing out bacteria that could otherwise cause cavities and consist of a plastic material which can be painted onto the tooth surfaces.
The layer of sealant is extremely thin and does not interfere with the way the teeth bite together. These chewing surfaces often have quite deep grooves and fissures that are difficult to brush properly so fissure sealants create a smooth and easy-to-clean surface and greatly reduce the risk of tooth decay.
Ideally, fissure sealants should be applied to your child’s newly erupted adult back teeth, before they can develop any cavities or signs of decay. This is because they can only be used on healthy teeth and cannot protect those that already have cavities or fillings.
Sometimes we will recommend using fissure sealants to protect a child’s milk or primary teeth, particularly if these teeth have very deep fissures that would be difficult to keep clean.
The procedure only requires one appointment with our Greensborough dentist. We will clean your child’s teeth before applying a light etching solution to slightly roughen the tooth surfaces.
This helps to provide a better bond between the sealant and the tooth. The sealant is painted onto the teeth and it will harden in just a few minutes. Afterwards the teeth can be used normally.
