A sinus lift is a specialised type of bone graft that adds bone to your upper jaw in the area just above your premolars and molars. This is where the sinus cavity is located so it is generally necessary for the membrane in between the cavity and your jaw to be ‘lifted’ to make room for the additional bone.
We will suggest a sinus lift if you do not have sufficient height or width of bone in your upper jaw, or if your sinus cavity is too close to the jawbone to safely place your dental implants.
Your dental implants need to be surrounded by several millimetres of strong and healthy bone in order to be successful. It is a common procedure, particularly for people who lost upper back teeth quite some time ago, or who have had periodontal disease (gum disease).
It can be best to try to schedule surgery so it doesn’t coincide with any seasonal allergies.
The bone graft is likely to consist of an artificial material that helps promote the growth of your own bone cells. X-rays and a CT scan are used to plan surgery.
It is necessary to expose the jawbone through making a small incision in your gums. The next step is to cut into the bone, exposing the membrane between the jawbone and the sinus cavity.
This is ‘lifted’ out of the way so the area can be packed with granules of bone graft material. The bone is then replaced and the gums are stitched back into position.
It might be possible to have your dental implant placed at the same time, but otherwise the graft will be left to heal and implant surgery will be scheduled for several months later.
