The clear plastic aligners gently but firmly re-position the teeth, gradually moving them into the correct positions that will have been predetermined in your treatment plan.
Each set of aligners is worn for two weeks, for at least twenty two hours each day, before being exchanged for a new set that will continue the tooth movements until the teeth are in their new positions.
This system can be ideal for adults and for older teenagers who would prefer to straighten their teeth as discreetly as possible. The aligners are quite difficult to see and don’t interfere with everyday activities.
They are removed for eating and drinking and for regular brushing and flossing so it is easy to keep your teeth clean while using Invisalign and there is no need to avoid hard or crunchy foods that could damage conventional fixed braces.
Most adults will be suitable for this type of orthodontics, as well as some older teenagers who have good patient compliance.
Invisalign can correct many types of orthodontic problems, including spaces in between teeth, issues with overcrowding or overlapping teeth and bite problems.
It may not always be suitable for more complex issues and we will only recommend this system if we feel it will provide the best results for you.
One of the great things about Invisalign is its use of computerised technology that provides patients with virtual images showing how their teeth will move.
You will be able to see how your newly straightened smile will appear before deciding to go ahead with treatment.
Invisalign is one of the most popular orthodontic systems in the world and uses technologies that have been proven to provide very good results. One of the advantages of Invisalign is its ease of use, as it utilises removable clear plastic aligners to move teeth into the correct positions.
Although these aligners need to be worn for most of the time (at least 22 hours each day) they can be removed for eating and drinking, and whenever you brush and floss.
This makes it very easy to maintain good oral health without the need to spend additional time cleaning around brackets and wires. In addition, there is no need to avoid hard or sticky foods which could damage conventional fixed braces.
Invisalign is able to correct most orthodontic problems, including issues with the way teeth bite together as well as correcting overcrowded or overlapping teeth.
If you have more complex problems then we may still recommend fixed braces.
This can vary according to the problems requiring correction. Most people will spend around a year wearing braces, but sometimes treatment may be shorter or longer.
If you only have minor problems with the way your teeth are aligned then it is possible for treatment to take just a few months.
Yes, as retainers are required after virtually all types of orthodontics. Invisalign produces its own retainers that are made from the same virtually invisible plastic and which should be comfortable to wear.
Initially you will need to wear your retainers virtually all the time, gradually reducing the number of hours as your teeth settle down and become accustomed to their new positions.
